Building ratings: Understanding what a NatHERS score is and how it impacts your energy efficiency

Building Ratings:
Understanding what a NatHERS score is and how it impacts your energy efficiency.

Every home has a rating. This rating represents your home’s energy efficiency. With this, it generates a star rating. The higher the star rating, the less energy is needed to heat and cool the home to keep it comfortable. So how does all this work, and what must you do to know your rating?

How Many Stars?

Your house plans and specifications are taken by your builder to an energy efficiency company that inputs the information into an accredited software tool called NatHERS. NatHERS tools estimate the amount of heat that needs to be added or removed to keep the home comfortable. From here, the program generates a star rating out of 10 and a certificate. NatHERS remains the most popular pathway to demonstrate compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC) energy efficiency requirements. A star rating of 6 or above is required in most parts of Australia. Designers may vary the building shape, window size and location, and shading or construction materials to optimize the performance of the design and to get a higher star rating.
